x + y = 9
x = 9 - y
x - 1/2y = 3...multiply by 2
2x - y = 6
2(9 - y) = 6
18 - 2y = 6
-2y = 6 - 18
-2y = - 12
y = -12/-2
y = 6
x + y = 9
x + 6 = 9
x = 9 - 6
x = 3
solution is (3,6)
