What purpose does the semicolon serve in the following sentence?

Leticia has to leave early this afternoon; she has a doctor’s appointment.

It's purpose is to connect two different sentences. They both have different subjects, but still apply to eachother.
"Leticia has to leave early this afternoon;"
Is the first half of the sentence.
"She has a doctor's appointment."
Explains the first half of the sentence, thus completing it.
