Malinke people created an empire in the West Africa in the early 13th century. The base of their economy was agriculture and gold trade. After that they created Mali Empire ( 1230 - 1340 ). Mali Empire expanded to control Trans-Saharan trade routes. Islam was adopted as religion of the Empire. This was the first Muslim Empire in sub-Saharan Africa.
