The speaker wants to avoid exactly what most people desire and pusue: publicity, popularity, recongnition. The American poet Emily Dickinson withdrew from society before she was 30. This poem tells a little of her opinion about being somebody, which for her was so boring, and despite the admiration, it wouldn't bring happiness. She prefered to be unknown, a nobody.
