The basketball players at Rafael’s middle school are selling T-shirts, and he wants to determine the average number of shirts that have been sold. First he surveyed five members of the 7th-grade boys basketball team. Then he surveyed every third basketball player on the boys and girls 6th- through 8th-grade basketball teams. Which sampling technique should produce a more representative sample?

Answer with explanation:

The Information about the basketball players at Rafael’s middle school is as follows:

They are selling T shirts.

To determine the average number of shirts that have been sold.

1. He surveyed five members of the 7th-grade boys basketball team.

2. He surveyed every third basketball player on the boys and girls 6th- through 8th-grade basketball teams.

Surveying five members of 7th grade boys basketball team would not produce better result , because the sample size is very small.

To get the better result , we need large sample size , that is more students are included.

So, surveying every third basket ball player on the boys and girls 6th through 8th grade has large sample size than surveying only 5 members , so it will bring out better result.

Number of players in either Man or Woman team = 12

So, total number of players from 6th to 8th class= 12*3+12*3=36+36=72

Every third player is surveyed.

Number of players surveyed
=(72)/(3)\\\\=24

Surveying every third basketball player on the boys and girls 6th- through 8th-grade basketball teams is a better sampling technique to determine number of T shirt sold at Rafael middle school.
