Denial happens when someone choose to comforted themselves with false narrative rather than have to face a cold hard truth
Death is a really scary concept for a lot of people and often really hard to face if it fell to someone that's really important to us. So, a lot of the people choose to deny the truth in their mind rather than have to be emotionally hurt
