In carrying out the subtraction:

`(6x^2-4x-5)-(3x^2-7x+2)`

We observe that:

`\begin{gathered} 6x^2-3x^2=3x^2 \\ -4x-(-7x)=3x\text{ and }-4x+(-7x)=-11x \\ -5-(2)=-7\text{ and }-5+(2)=-3 \\ \end{gathered}`

We observe that the student added two of the terms instead of subtracting. This was the error in the students' work.
