Underwater earthquakes can trigger tsunamis by unleashing underwater landslides, which also displace huge amounts of seawater.

Earthquakes cause the seafloor to rise and fall. Tsunamis travel quickly, at up to 800km (500 miles) per hour. A tsunami can form a wall of water more than 24m (80 feet) high when it approaches shallow water near shore.
