Is average speed lesser than average velocity?

No, average velocity is less than average speed.
Speed is a scalar quantity so it's (s=d/t), where as velocity, a vector component is (v=displacement/time). Displacement is also a vector component so it can be negative if we're going on the opposite direction from the reference point.
