To the ancient Greeks, citizenship meant talking and debating on how to improve the welfare of the community. Male citizens in Athens could vote on all the decisions that affected the city and serve on juries. However, democracy was not open to everyone. Women citizen and children were not allowed to vote. Slaves and foreigners, called the Metics,  living it Athens were banned from participating in government.
