I would say that from my experience at a very large open pit mining operation, a core maintenance process is called preventive maintenance. This means that the maintenance technicians do research to know when all the parts in key machinery will break down or wear out and so they schedule regular shut-downs of the large haultrucks, electric shovels and drills where as well as lubing and changing oil, they replace worn parts to ensure production is not held up.
