At the start of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union Army was not in great shape.

They were chasing the Army of Northern Virginia into their own territory for the first time in the War and morale was low.

By pushing the Army of Northern Virginia back below the Mason-Dixon, the Union Army was able to regain momentum and the tide of the war was turned.
