To solve for an equation, get the x variable on one side of the equation and everything else should be on the opposite side of the variable x.

In our equation we have some parentheses. Use the distributive law to simplify.

5(2x - 1) + 3 = -1
10x + 5 + 3 = -1

Combine like terms.

10x - 5 + 3 = -1
10x - 2 = -1

Add 2 to each side of the equation.

10x - 2 + 2 = -1 + 2
10x = 1

Divide both sides by 10.

10x / 10 = 1 / 10
x = 1/10

So, x is equal to 1/10.
