Phagocytes kill pathogens (disease-causing organisms) by phagocytosis in which they flow round the pathogen and engulf it. When the pathogen is trapped inside a vacuole in the phagocyte, it is killed and then digested by enzymes.

Phagocytes are the white blood cells that protect the body by ingesting (phagocytosing) harmful foreign particles, bacteria, and dead or dying cells.
