How does an intransitive verb differ from a transitive verb ?

An intransitive verb does not direct action toward anyone or anything named in the sentence.

intransitive verbs do not have a direct object
Ex. He ran.

transitive verbs have a direct object (transitive verbs transfer the action to the object)
Ex. I want candy
