Hey!

Hope this helps...

One of these questions are always tricky, one thing you need to know, is you want to try to solve for one variable, and than substitute it in, to find the value of the other variable, and than plug that answer in to the original question to find the value of that other variable.

That probably sounds really confusing, so I'll just do the math, and guide you along the path...

First, we are going to solve for y, and plug it into 3x-2y=42...

2x - y = 26

2x = 26 + y

y = 2x - 26

----------------

3x - 2y = 42

3x - 2(2x - 26) = 42

3x - 4x - 52 = 42

-x - 52 = 42

-x = 94

x = -94

-----------------

3x - 2y = 42

3(-94) - 2y = 42

-282 - 2y = 42

-2y = 324

y = -162

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHECK:
2x - y = 26
2(-94) - (-162) = 26
-188 + 162 = 26
-26 = 26 CORRECT
--------------
3x - 2y = 42
3(-94) - 2(-162) = 42
-282 + 324 = 42
42 = 42 CORRECT
