James should get a debit card which can be tied directly to up to at least one account ie his chequing account if he so chose and that way he also does not run up a credit bill because it comes directly from his account so no credit need be obtained. On the other hand, if he wants credit but not a credit card he can get a line of credit on his chequing account and it's interest rate especially if it secured with an appropriate amount can obtain an interest rate much less than a conventional credit card and it is basically taking a loan from oneself.
