Trench warfare was a disadvantage for nearly all countries involved because it placed the war at a standstill. Troops fought primarily from trenches with machine guns, which were newly invented at the time. The war was mostly at a standstill because people rarely left their trenches. This halted fighting and no nations surrendered, which caused the war to drag on.
