The water molecule is composed of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Hydrogen and oxygen have very different electronegativities: oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen, oxygen can attract more shared electrons in a covalent bond. When a water molecule is very close to other water molecules, specific interactions between a hydrogen in a molecule and the oxygen in the nearby molecule are established, forming a very strong type of union known as a hydrogen bond. This makes water have different qualities, such as high solvent capacity, high specific heat, high heat of vaporization, great cohesion and adhesion.
