The reason behind the 1834, British Poor Law , dubbed by its critics the "starvation act" was the distress caused by the separation of members of families from one another in workhouses which encouraged the poor to move to areas of higher employment in such of employment. The law was meant to help curb this situation and reduce the breaking up of the local families.
