A fear appeal is a persuasive message that attempts to arouse fear in order to divert behavior through the threat of impending danger or harm. It presents a risk, presents the vulnerability to the risk, and then may, or may not suggest a form of protective action. Hope this helps
and example could be the tobacco commercials, and how they try and convince us the views not to smoke

Fear appeal is scaring people into not doing certain things. hm one fear appeal would be maybe a commercial showing a boy on a subway train being kidnapped because his mom was away from him and it would scare mom's not to leave their kids alone.
