If a cookies has 130 calories. An orange has 35 calories. What is the ratio of calories in a orange to the calories in the cookies?

The greatest common factor is the product of the shared primes of the two numbers.

35=5*7, 130=2*5*13, so the GCF is just 5, so divide each term by five to simplify the ratio

35/5:130/5

You could represent this situation by putting the calories of one snack on one side of the ratio and doing the same with other snack on the other side:

35:130, meaning that for every 35 calories an orange has, a cookie has 130 calories

You could simplify this by dividing both numbers by 5.

7:26, meaning that for every 7 calories an orange has, a cookie has 25 calories
