Ice is less dense than water, which allows it to float on liquid water. Why does this happen?

ice is less dense then water because the orientation of hydrogen bonds causes molecules to push farther apart which lowers density.

Ice floats because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water. A substance floats if it is less dense, or has less mass per unit volume, than other components in a mixture.
