Well the other guys answer is technically right their a few more details to it. The league of nations was also another attempt to stop further wars between various groups in the world. They didn't want another Holocaust or world war to happen so it made it that all nations would turn on one nation or nations if they did go rogue and attack.

As the Great War rendered millions of human and economic loss, the European states went to form the league of nations. This was a forum to discuss global, or regional affairs that would go solved by peaceful means.

Woodrow Wilson, the American president at that time, had been promoting the creation of this forum and curiously the nation didnt came to be a member. Altough the league of nations reflected preocupations of the current European politics it failed to prevent the coming of the World War II.

The Member nations pledged to seek peace, among other principles that are similar to the United Nations: the resolution of conflict by non violent means, the respect for the sovereignity of nations, the recognition of plurality in the political spheres. As this principles are stated in its charter , the league set the precedent for the present day Security Council and was one of the multi lateral forums at that time.
