Whats the maximum number of covalent bonds a carbon atom can formwith other atoms

Each carbon atom in ethane forms 4 bonds: 1 to a carbon atom and 3 to each of the attached hydrogen atoms. A single covalent bond containing 2 shared electrons is also called a sigma (σ) bond.
