The parent function of the function g(x) = (x – h)2 + k is f(x) = x2. The vertex of the function g(x) is located at (9, –8). What are the values of h and k?

The correct answer is h = 9 and k = -8.


While this may seem like a much more complicated problem, the fact is that the vertex of the equation is aways expressed in terms of (h, k). So, since this vertex is already given, we know that the values are simply the values of h and k are simply the x and y values of the vertex. No math is really needed to solve this.
