Renaissance started in Florence Italy. Much ancient classical knowledge (medicine, astronomy, architecture etc)was translated and spread by this cultural movement. This paved the way for the Enlightenment philosophers and statesmen to apply this knowledge to greater freedom of the individual in thought and rights.
