If you scowl because you are angry, or frown because you are sad, what function of nonverbal communication are you engaged in?

The correct answer is expressing internal states.
So, if you want to nonverbally show someone that you are angry, you would scowl and they would understand your reaction. If you frown, it could mean that you are said - this communication doesn't have to include words in order to convey what it is that you are feeling.
