Let the number of boys be x. Then,
According to question,
5/6 = x/312
x = (5×312)/6.............(312 cancelled from 6 for 52 times)
x = 5×52
⇒ x = 260

That's how we came to know that Boys are 260.

260.

If there are 5 boys for every 6 girls, this can be made into a fraction
(5 boys)/(6 girls)

This can be set equal to some number of boys over the number of girls (312).
(5/6)=(x/312)
6x=1560
X=260
