A. x + y = 44 and y = x + 2
B.x + y = 44 and y = 2x

A because y is larger than x by 2.

x + y = 44
y = x + 2

Substitute eqn 2 into eqn 1
x + x + 2 = 44
2x = 42
x = 21

Thus, the smaller number is 21.
