A contractor was hired to build an outdoor playpen for a small family dog. The playpen should be square and should have a total area of 200 square feet. How long should the individual sides of the playpen be? (Recall that the area of a square is calculated by 2003-04-02-00-00_files/i0150000.jpg, where l is the length of one side.)

Area of a square = side × side

A square has four equal sides, so we can write the area of a square as

A=s×
s

A= s^(2)

200= s^(2)

s= √(200)=10 √(2)=14.14 rounded to 2 dp
