The total fencing around a square field is 80 yards. The field has an area of how many square yards?

A=base x height.  Perimeter of a square is 4 x the length of 1 side.  So let x represent the side, then set up your equation like this.  4x=80.  Now divide both sides by 4 you get x=20.  So we know the length of one side.  So just do 20 x 20, or 20(squared) and you have 400 square yards.
