How can you tell that this is part of the story's resolution?

For a distance of fifty yards, at a point about a mile and a half north of Gulch City, the old Livingston trail
had to be abandoned. It would have been more labor to repair it than to clear a new path through the
brush. And when I left that part of the country two years later, the packers would still turn out of their way
for a minute to look at the "Giant Hole," and to kick up the skull or part of the skeleton of a wolf out of the
weeds and brush.
