Answer: A. Colin's mother loved roses; when he plants one, he makes a connection with her.

In The Secret Garden, both the garden and the act of gardening serve as ways in which the characters can connect with each other, and with others that are valuable to them. Colin experiences great changes throughout the book. He becomes more independent, but also more kind. One of his main conflicts is his lack of a mother. However, as he plants the first rose in the garden, Colin makes a connection with his mother, as she loved the flower.
