The pair of points A(3, 8) and B(-1, 8) are shown in the graph above.

The distance between both points can be derived by simply counting how many units from point A to point B, which is 4 units. This is quite simple and straight forward when you have a striaght line like the one above. However when the line between both points is diagonal or lies in between defined points (that is fractions or decimals), then you apply the following formula;
