How can you tell if two species are closely related on a clasp gram or phylogenetic tree?

Solution:

On a phylogenetic tree, more closely related terminal taxa are connected by nodes nearer to the tips of the tree, and more distantly related terminal taxa are connected by nodes nearer to the base of the tree.

That is, two species are more related if they have a more recent common ancestor and less related if they have a less recent common ancestor.
