Fortunato means “fortunate one” in Italian and it could be seen that he is fortunate most of his life. he is describe as to have a weak spot by the narrator although he was a man to respect and maybe feared. However, his names becomes ironic because of how his life ended, he was walled up alive in an underground crypt so he asphyxiated.

In the story "The Cast of Amontillado" where a mean character is a man named Fortunato. Well, in reality, we know Fortunato comes from the word "fortunate" which means lucky, blessed and favored. But, in the story "The Cast of Amontillado", it was opposite where Fortunato encountered the worst situation, surprise misfortune when he meets Montresor who get him and put him in the cellar or on the ground level of the house. Well, his life becomes really ironic to what he has been encountering. He has an attitude of being a conceited and he has a high pride. He was challenged by Montresor and because of Fortunato's conceitedness, he was perceived by Montresor. Fortunato's misfortune even ended in losing his life in the hand of Montresor.
