Answer: The architect who built the Duomo was Filipino Brunelleschi, a significant member of the architect's guild in Florence. In 1415 he designed the dome which was called the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo. It had two layers, with the inner being a cathedral that could be protected from weather, while the outside was beautifully made, so as to be visually pleasing to the citizens of Florence as well as aesthetically fitting to the rest of its surroundings.

Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.
