Probably oil since by 2016, petroleum consumption was 37% being the most fossil fuel consumed. In the other hand, natural gas was 29%, coal was 15%, renewable energy was 10% and nuclear was 9%.

Ok...
The top fossil fuel consumed in the U.S. is natural gas. The SECOND fossil fuel consumed in the U.S. is oil.
