The atomic bomb was a new weapon of mass destruction, people were very scared of it being used on them. After WW2, the Soviets wanted tot prove they could be just as powerful, if not more powerful, than the Americans. They set out to build their own weapons and started an ARMs race. Basically, the soviets and Americans wanted to have the best and most weapons, so they fought against each other, starting the Cold War.
