After winning the war Union (North) collaborated with the South to make one nation as it had promised before winning the war. Reconstruction of the South began after the war, new labor laws were promoted to the freed slaves so that they no longer stayed as slaves. The challenge was the South because they were not pleased with losing the war, they tried to control slavery by implementing The Black Code laws. The economy of the southern states was disrupted former slaves, planters, and non-slave holding whites.
