Subtract 9x from both sides:

3x-17-9x=9x+7-9x
Now we have:

-6x-17=7

Add 17 to both sides:

-6x-17+17=7+17

Now we have:

-6x=24

Divide both sides by -6 to isolate x:
x=-4
