Answer: 1 billion

The one-child policy was implemented in China as part of a program to reduce the size of its population. The legislation set a limit on how many children parents could have. It was introduced in 1979, but in the mid 1980s it was modified, so that for much of its history, many couples (about half of all parents) represented an exception to the rule. The policy lasted until 2015.
