1- Eighth more than twice a number. it means 8+2x. Linear function.

2- Three more than the product of two numbers: 3 + x*y. Product of two linear variables.

3- Ten more than the square of a number: 10 + x*x. Quadratic function.

4- Nine more than one divided by a number: 9 + 1/x. Inverse function.

As we can see only options 1 and 2 could be linear. However, the product of two linear variables is not linear, is quadratic.

Finally, We can conclude that the only description which can be written as a linear function is: Eighth more than twice a number.
