Let the number of times he travelled by automobile be T. If he travels a certain number of miles by automobile and then nine times as far by airplane, then the number of miles by airplane would be

= 9T

If his total trip was 600 miles in length then

T + 9T = 600

10T = 600

T = 60

By plane, he must have traveled

= 9 * 60 miles

= 540 miles
