The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves. The 14th Amendment also guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.” It was was adopted on July 9, 1868, as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. This Amendment was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War.
