Peasants, because unlike most of the popular religions at the time, Catholics (at that time all Christians were Catholic) believe that no matter your social class or wealth, you can reach eternal salvation as long as you live your life as a good person according to the Bible. This was especially appealing to peasants because they lived such miserable lives, so now they had something to look forward to after life.
