What accounted for the changes for american attitudes during the 1970s?

Jimmy Carter was elected because people were not happy with the people in the government. As a reaction to the counterculture, a rise in Christian fundamentalism was also observed.
Further, a Southern Strategy was developed and used by Nixon, and this helped him to succeed in the reelections.
