They, both the "islands" Antigua and Manhattan are technically by geographical terms islands, as they are not connected by land to a continent or another body of land. They are surrounded by water, thus Isolated land, Island.

the author felt this because the only thing manhattab and antigua share is that they both were covered with water and were isolated
