Suppose that a cyclist began a 308 mi ride across a state at the western edge of the state, at the same time that a car traveling toward it leaves the eastern end of the state. If the bicycle and car met after 5.5 hr and the car traveled 33.6 mph faster than the bicycle, find the average rate of each. The car's average rate is ____mph The bicycle's average rate is ____mph.

let speed of bicycle be xmph
then speed of car will be x+33.6mph
total speed of both of them since they are moving towards each other= 2x+33.6
308miles/2x+33.6mph=5.5
2x+33.6=308/5.5=56
2x=56-33.6=22.4
x=11.2
bicycle ave rate is 11.2
car ave rate is 44.8
